telling the story of the fallen Debris

I was brought on to help build the brand story for a Play2Earn game called DEBRIS, and provide content direction for the teaser phase before its official launch.

My first thought was storytelling. It’s the foundation of all games and what always comes before a game begins. The backstory you read before clicking Start or Enter. It’s also the strongest way to get people hooked to your product, your brand, or in this case, your game.

There was a story written for when you start playing the game: It starts with a bang, a comet explodes in the sky. But what happened before that?

The game is called DEBRIS, shiny gems, or glowing “debris”, from a comet, called Lillith, that came hurdling down towards Earth and exploded in the sky.

We created a teaser phase called Stage 0, and narrated the story of what happened (on social) before the explosion. The suspense, the breaking news, the public naming of the comet, the people’s reactions and comments on what will happen next. The story was a “live” countdown, a live prelude to DEBRIS.

And the world watched it unfold with us.
